TikTok carousel posts: what they are and what makes people save them.

A TikTok carousel is a photo mode post: up to 35 photos that people swipe through, with text on each one and a sound underneath. We studied 1,332 carousels that went viral to see what they have in common, from text cards versus photos to the last slide.

What a TikTok carousel is, and why it has three names.

TikTok calls it a photo post, made in photo mode. Marketers borrowed "carousel" from Instagram and LinkedIn. Most people searching TikTok just say slideshow. They are the same thing: still photos the viewer swipes left through at their own pace, while a sound plays.

What a carousel post is thereWhat's usually on the slides
TikTokA photo mode post in the For You feed, with a sound and a captionPhotos with a line of text on each, often a story or a list
InstagramA post with several photos or videos in one swipeable setPhoto dumps, designed tips, product shots
LinkedInUsually a PDF uploaded as a documentDesigned text slides: a title, a point per page

For the steps, photo limits and sizes, see how to make a slideshow on TikTok.

TikTok carousel vs video: what each one is good at.

TikTok publishes no reach numbers for photo posts versus videos, so this is based on how each format plays and on our own library.

Who sets the pace
Carousel

The viewer. They read each slide as long as they like and can swipe back.

Video

The video. Miss a line and it's gone until the loop.

Saves
Carousel

Lists, guides and checklists are reference content. The median viral carousel in our library was saved by 3.5% of viewers.

Video

Saved when it teaches something; hard to scan later.

Reach
Carousel

Shows in the same For You feed. Our 1,332 carousels had a median of 3.6M views.

Video

The default format, with more ways to be found, like search and replies.

Getting paid
Carousel

Not eligible for Creator Rewards.

Video

Videos over one minute can earn through Creator Rewards.

Effort per post
Carousel

Photos and a few lines of text. No filming, editing or talking to camera.

Video

Filming, cuts, captions, often your face and voice.

Does TikTok pay for carousels? Not directly.

Creator Rewards is for videos

TikTok's Creator Rewards Program pays for original videos longer than one minute. Photo mode posts aren't eligible, however many views they get.

Eligibility rules and countries change. Check TikTok's own Creator Rewards page for the current terms.

  • Saves and followsA saved carousel is one people come back to, and a follow is the next post seen.
  • Comments that ask"What app is that?" under a post where the app only shows on a phone screen is the cheapest install there is.
  • Brand deals and your own productAccounts that post carousels earn from what they sell or promote, not from the views.

Text cards or photos? What 11,465 viral slides show.

There are two ways to build a carousel. Design carousels are LinkedIn style: text on a plain or branded card. Photo-story carousels are real photos with a line of text on them. We sorted every slide in the library by what's on it.

How the 1,332 viral carousels are built

A tie on saves

Within the same format, design carousels are saved about as often as photo ones. The saves come from the content: a guide is a guide.

11.1% vs 8.2%

Median likes per view for photo carousels against design carousels. People like a post that looks like someone's life more than a poster.

Anatomy of a carousel with 191,000 saves.

A gift ideas post with 2.3M views, saved by 8.3% of the people who saw it. Eight slides, text on two of them. Here is what each slide does and why you swipe on.

314K likes, 191K saves, 125 comments: reference content, not a debate.

  1. Slide 1: night flash photo of a girl on her boyfriend's back, text gift ideas, boyfriend edition

    Slide 1The promise

A real couple in a flash photo and the words gift ideas, boyfriend edition. You know what you'll get.

You swipe to see the first idea.

  2. Slide 2: a deck of cards tied with gingham ribbon, top card reads 52 things that I love about you

    Slide 2An easy first idea

A deck of cards, each with one reason. No caption: the photo is the instruction.

It's doable this weekend, so the next ones might be too.

  3. Slide 3: a lit shadow box with tiny gold frames of couple photos

    Slide 3A step up

A lit shadow box of tiny framed photos. More effort, more wow.

Now you're comparing ideas, not just looking.

  4. Slide 4: framed playing cards printed with couple photos, centre card reads I'd bet on us

    Slide 4A callback

Playing cards again, now framed with photos. Familiar enough to feel like a set.

Patterns make you want to see the whole set.

  5. Slide 5: a scrapbook collage with a couple photo, stamps and a disco ball sticker on a bed

    Slide 5Something cheap

A scrapbook page on a bed. Paper, glue and printed photos.

Every budget is covered, so nobody leaves yet.

  6. Slide 6: five kraft bags labelled taste, touch, smell, sound and sight above a poster

    Slide 6The best idea, late

Five bags, one per sense. The cleverest idea is the reward for getting this far.

This is the slide people screenshot, then save the whole post.

  7. Slide 7: a white frame with two toy figures, a red heart and the words happy birthday

    Slide 7A personal touch

Two toy figures with the couple's names. Shows how to make any idea yours.

One more, and the end is close.

  8. Slide 8: photo booth strips of a kissing couple with the text follow for more

    Slide 8The close

Photo booth strips plus "follow for more". Still useful, so it doesn't feel like an ask.

You've seen seven ideas and remember three. You save it.

What makes people swipe to the last slide.

TikTok doesn't publish how far viewers swipe, so we use the closest public signal: saves, people keeping a post for later. Five patterns from the library.

A number in the hook

"6 hobbies", "40 date ideas". A number tells people how long the swipe is, so they're less likely to quit halfway. Hooks are covered in depth in our TikTok hooks study.

3.9%saved, number in hook
3.4%saved, no number

Four to nine slides

Long enough to pay off, short enough to finish. Posts with 15 or more slides drop to 2.8%.

3.9%saved, 4–9 slides
1.5%saved, 1–3 slides

A reason on the last slide

"Follow for more" or "save this" on the last slide. Posts that end with one were saved more often.

A series people wait for

Hooks with "pt. 2" or "part 3" were saved by 4.2% of viewers. A carousel that worked once usually works again with new items.

How ClonBot makes photo-story carousels for apps.

An app is hard to put in a design carousel without it reading as an ad. In a photo story it's one more photo: a phone on the counter, open on the app.

  • It starts from a carousel that workedOne of 1,332 viral posts, with its real views and saves. The hook, slide rhythm and text style stay.
  • The story is new, the app is one slideFive plates, then the phone that tells her which plate is today's. The app's name isn't in the text; the screen shows it and the comments ask.
  • Real screens, one creator, every dayThe phone shows your app's actual screens. The same creator runs the account, and autopilot builds tomorrow's posts for you to approve. Plans start at $99 a month for 60 posts.

Questions about TikTok carousels.

What is a carousel post on TikTok?

It's a photo mode post: several photos in one post that the viewer swipes through, each with optional text, with a sound playing underneath. TikTok calls these photo posts. "Carousel" and "slideshow" both mean the same thing on TikTok.

Are carousels better than videos on TikTok?

Neither is better everywhere. Carousels suit content people read at their own pace and keep: lists, guides, gift ideas. Videos suit things that move or need a voice, and only videos can earn through Creator Rewards.

Does TikTok pay for carousel posts?

Not through Creator Rewards, which pays for original videos longer than one minute; photo mode posts don't qualify. Carousels make money indirectly, through follows, brand deals and whatever the account sells or promotes, such as an app.

Do carousels do well on TikTok?

They can. The 1,332 viral carousels in our library had a median of 3.6M views. Guides and checklists get saved the most; stories and relatable posts get more views but fewer saves.

How many photos can a TikTok carousel have?

Up to 35. The ones that get saved most are shorter: four to nine slides. Sizes and the full steps are in our guide on how to make a slideshow on TikTok.

Should a TikTok carousel use text cards or photos?

Photos, in most cases: 78% of the viral carousels in our library use no text cards, and photo carousels get more likes per view. Use a text card where text is the content, like a recipe card.

What is the purpose of a carousel?

To hold attention across several slides and give people a reason to come back. On TikTok that usually means a list or a short story with a payoff near the end.

Tomorrow's carousel, built from one that already worked.
