What is a TikTok hook? The first line people read.
A TikTok hook is the first thing a viewer sees or hears: the opening line of a video, or the text on slide one of a photo slideshow. Its only job is to stop the scroll and make the next second, or the next slide, feel worth it.
In a slideshow there's no voice and no motion to help. The hook is a few words over a photo, read in a second or two, and it doubles as the cover in your profile grid. These four slide ones each got tens of millions of views with a different pattern.

What else the data says
One to three words gets the most views (5.1M median), but only 3.0% of viewers save it. Ten to fourteen words drops to 3.1M and climbs to 4.0% saved, because a longer hook can promise something specific.
Lowercase beats shouting for saves. The 392 all-lowercase hooks were saved 3.9% of the time, the 90 in all caps 3.1%. Lowercase reads like a friend's post, caps like an ad.
Emoji help saves, not reach. The 203 hooks with an emoji had a 4.1% save rate but 3.1M median views, below the library's 3.6M.
POV is rare in slideshows. Only 18 hooks use it. It's a video habit; on slide one a plain list or a question does the same job.
How to adapt a viral hook to your niche and app.
Copying a hook word for word puts you in a niche that isn't yours. Keep the frame, change the nouns, and let the slides after it do the selling.
- Pick the pattern for the jobFor saves, use how-to, a list or a number. For reach, a question, a quote or a two-word label. The leaderboard above has the numbers.
- Keep the frame, swap the nouns"Oh you don't want to study?" becomes "Oh you don't want to practise your spanish?". Same sneer, same rhythm, a new audience.
- Keep the length, case and line breaksIf the original was six lowercase words on two lines, yours should be too. The look of the text is part of the hook.
- Leave the app out of the hookNever name your app on slide one. A hook that reads like an ad gets skipped like one. The app shows up on a later slide, on the phone, where it helps the story, and the comments ask what it is.
- Make slide two pay off at onceThe hook is a promise. If the second slide doesn't start delivering it, people swipe away and the views stall.
The hook keeps its tough-love joke. The app first appears on the last slide: a streak on her phone at a café in Spain.
Here the hook barely changes, because the niche is the same. The app is the last method on the list: blocking your apps.

Six hook mistakes that waste a good slideshow.
Naming the app
"Learn Spanish fast with this app" reads as an ad before anyone swipes. The viral version is a joke or a problem, and the app comes later.
Promising what the slides don't deliver
"Things nobody tells you" followed by tips everyone knows. Viewers notice by slide two and leave.
Writing a paragraph
Fifteen-plus words can work for a story, but on a busy photo it turns into a wall. If it doesn't fit on three short lines, cut it.
Inventing a new pattern

What is a hook on TikTok?
The hook is the opening of a post: the first line spoken or shown in a video, or the text on the first slide of a photo slideshow. It decides whether someone keeps watching or scrolls on, so it is the most important line in the post.
What are the best TikTok hooks?
It depends on what you want. In our library of 1,315 viral slideshows, quote hooks had the highest median views (6.2M), followed by questions (5.5M) and two-to-four-word labels (5.0M). How-to hooks were saved the most (4.4%), ahead of list hooks (4.4%) and hooks that name who the post is for (4.2%).
How long should a TikTok hook be?
Short enough to read in a second or two. Hooks of one to three words had the most views (5.1M median), while ten to fourteen words got saved more often (4.0% against 3.0%). On a slideshow, three short lines is a good upper limit.
How do you write a viral hook?
Start from a pattern that already went viral in your niche, keep its frame and length, and swap in your own topic. Then make sure slide two delivers on it right away. Writing two versions from different patterns and posting both is the fastest way to find what your audience responds to.
Can I reuse a viral hook?
Hook frames get reused all the time; that's how patterns like "things nobody tells you" spread. Reuse the frame, not the whole post: change the nouns to fit your niche, use your own photos and tell your own story so the post is clearly yours.
Should my app's name be in the hook?
No. A hook that names a product reads as an ad and gets skipped. Put the app on a later slide, on the phone screen in the photo, where it's part of the story. People who want it will ask in the comments.
Do hooks work differently in slideshows than in videos?
Yes. A video hook has a voice, a face and motion to work with. A slideshow hook is silent text over one photo, and slide one is also the cover people see on your profile. That favours short, readable lines and a photo that matches them.
