Whether a slideshow plays by itself or waits for a swipe is decided when you post it. Here is how to pick, how to time the photos, and which one viral slideshows use.

To make a TikTok slideshow swipe automatically, post it in video mode: after picking your photos, tap Switch to video mode and each photo plays for a few seconds, then the next. To make it not swipe automatically, keep it in photo mode, where every photo stays until the viewer swipes.
You can't switch a post between the two after it's live. Try both below with a real slideshow from our library: 6.9M views, saved by 4.8% of viewers.
Photo mode
Waits for a swipe. Drag the photo, tap the arrows or use your arrow keys.

Video mode
Plays by itself. Pick how long each photo shows.

Bars: reading time each photo needs. Dashed line: time it gets.
Reading time here is one second to find the text plus one second per four words. "Fit" gives each photo the time its text needs.
Why some slideshows swipe automatically and others wait.
Three things decide it. Two are set by the person who posted, one by the person watching.
It was posted in photo mode
A photo post. Each photo stays until the viewer swipes, and the sound loops underneath. This is what most people mean by a swipe slideshow, and what every format in our library is.
It was posted in video mode
The photos were turned into a regular video, either by switching modes in TikTok, using a photo template, or exporting from an editor like CapCut. It plays by itself and loops, and nobody can hold a photo.
The viewer has auto scroll on
Auto scroll moves the For You feed on to the next post when one ends. It doesn't flip photos inside a slideshow: on a photo post, the feed waits until the viewer has swiped through.
When photo mode launched, photo posts advanced on their own for many viewers, and some guides still say they do. In current versions they wait for a swipe, but TikTok tests playback changes on some accounts, so the same post can behave a little differently on two phones.
How to make a TikTok slideshow swipe automatically, with the timing right.
Video mode is a switch. The work is in how long each photo stays, because nobody can go back to finish reading.
- Select your photosTap +, then Upload, turn on Select multiple and pick the photos in order. The full walkthrough is in how to make a slideshow on TikTok.
- Switch to video modeTap Switch to video mode, or Video in the Photo/Video toggle, depending on your version. The dots turn into a timeline.
- Pick the sound firstChoose the sound before touching the timing. Some versions offer a sync option that cuts the photos to the beat for you.
- Set how long each photo showsOpen the clip editor and drag the edge of each photo. Short hooks need 2 to 3 seconds; a slide with a list needs far more (see the ruler).
- Add text and postAdd your text after the timing is set, so you can check each line is readable. Then caption and post. Tips on fitting the words in adding text to a slideshow.
Seconds a photo needs, by words on it
One second to find the text, plus one per four words. The dashed line is 3 seconds.

Bar length out of 12 seconds. 10 words is the median text slide in 1,332 viral slideshows.
Cutting to the sound: at 120 beats per minute one bar of music is 2 seconds, so change photos every bar for short text and every two bars (4 seconds) for a sentence. You don't need to count: a bar is where the beat feels like it starts over.
How to make it not swipe automatically, and how viewers turn it off.
If you're posting, it's one choice in the editor. If you're watching, it's a feed setting, and sometimes it's the post itself.
If you're posting
- Select more than one photo and no videos. Mixing in a clip makes a video.
- In the editor, look for the dots under the photo. If you see a timeline instead, tap Switch to photo mode.
- Don't use a photo template or an export from another editor. Those arrive as videos.
A live post can't be switched. To fix one that auto-swipes, save the photos, post them again in photo mode and delete the old one. Posting from a computer or a scheduler? Check that it uploads a photo post, not a video (more in how to schedule TikTok posts).
If you're watching
To turn auto scroll on or off, press and hold on a video in the For You feed and tap Auto scroll. Hold again and choose Manual scroll to stop it. Some versions also list it under Settings and privacy.
If a slideshow keeps flipping on its own, it was posted as a video. There's no setting that turns a video back into a swipe post.
Why can't I swipe on a TikTok slideshow? Usually it's a video, so swiping left opens the profile instead. Otherwise update the app, swipe across the middle of the photo rather than near the caption, and on a computer use the arrows on the photo.
Swipe or auto? What 1,332 viral slideshows suggest.
Every format in our library was posted in photo mode, so this isn't a test of one mode against the other. It does show what the text on viral slideshows asks of a viewer.
| Words a slide | Saved | Views |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 2.8% | 4.8M |
| 5 to 8 | 2.9% | 4.6M |
| 9 to 12 | 3.0% | 4.0M |
| 13 to 19 | 3.7% | 3.1M |
| 20 or more | 4.7% | 2.4M |
of text slides carry more than 12 words, more than a 3-second photo can show.
viral slideshows have at least one slide that needs over 3 seconds to read.
the save rate for 20+ words a slide against 1 to 4 words. The short ones got about twice the views.
Wordy slideshows get saved; short ones travel further. Saves go to posts people want to read again, and those are the ones that need the viewer in control. So a guide, a list or anything with tips belongs in photo mode. A photo dump, a quote split over photos or a mood set to a song has a few words a photo, and plays well as a video cut to the beat.
Whichever you choose, the first photo does the work: it's what stops the scroll. See hooks that worked and what makes people swipe to the last slide.

Questions about slideshow auto swipe.
How do I turn on automatic swiping on TikTok?
For your own slideshow, switch it to video mode before posting, and the photos play by themselves. For the feed, press and hold on a video in For You and tap Auto scroll, which moves on to the next post when one ends.
How do I make a TikTok slideshow not swipe automatically?
Post it in photo mode: select several photos and no videos, check for the dots under the photo in the editor, and tap Switch to photo mode if you see a timeline. Photo posts wait for the viewer to swipe.
Why can't I swipe on a TikTok slideshow?
Most often the slideshow was posted as a video, so there's nothing to swipe and swiping left opens the profile. If it is a photo post, update the app and swipe across the middle of the photo. On a computer, use the arrows on the photo.
How do I make the swipe picture thing on TikTok?
That's photo mode. Tap +, tap Upload, turn on Select multiple, pick 2 to 35 photos in order and tap Next. Keep it in photo mode, add text and a sound, and post. Step by step in how to make a slideshow on TikTok.
Can I change a slideshow from swipe to auto after posting?
No. The mode is set when you post. Save the photos, post them again the way you want, and delete the first version if you don't want both up.
How long should each photo show in an auto slideshow?
About one second plus one second per four words of text. A 7-word hook needs about 3 seconds, an 18-word tip about 5.5, a 40-word list over 11. If a photo needs more than 5 or 6 seconds, it's usually better as a photo-mode post.
Why is TikTok not showing auto scroll?
Auto scroll has reached accounts gradually and isn't in every region. Update the app and check the long-press menu on a video in the For You feed. If it isn't there, it hasn't reached your account yet.
