What is a photo dump? The short answer.
A photo dump is one post with many loosely connected photos: a weekend, a month, a trip or a mood, posted as an Instagram carousel or a TikTok photo slideshow. The photo dump meaning is in the name. It should feel like you emptied your camera roll, casual and unposed, even when the order was planned.
Both spellings are used, "photo dump" and "photodump". On TikTok a photo dump has a second job: the first photo is the cover people see in the feed, so it has to stop the scroll.
Life dumps
Your own photos from one stretch of life: a trip, a night in, a new apartment, a pet, the study grind. "My camera roll after 3 weeks in Tanzania" is the classic.

Idea dumps
A themed board people save for later: dinner ideas, haircut ideas, date ideas, outfit inspo. Often four photos to a slide with a two-word label.

Anatomy of a viral photo dump, slide by slide.
"Random" is the look, not the method. We sorted every slide of the 175 dumps by what it shows. The cover is different from everything after it.
What each slide shows
Share of slides at that position, 175 dumps, 1,779 slides.
open on a person: a selfie, a mirror shot, friends. Across all slides people are only 35%, so the face is spent on the cover.
put a short line on slide 1. Text slides in these dumps carry a median of 4 words.
opened on a phone screen. Screens are 2% of all slides and almost always sit mid-deck.
Put your dump in order
Nine slides, the median length. Pick what each photo shows and see how the order compares with the 175 viral dumps.
Slide kinds come from a keyword read of the written description of each slide, so treat the shares as close, not exact.
How many photos in a photo dump? Six to twelve.
68% of the viral dumps used 6 to 12 photos, and the median was 9. Long dumps of 15 to 20 photos pulled the most views, but people saved them less. TikTok photo mode takes up to 35 photos and an Instagram carousel up to 20 (as of October 2026), and the longest dump in our set stopped at 20.
| Photos | Dumps | Median views | Saved |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 to 5 | 17 | 4.1M | 2.4% |
| 6 to 9 | 74 | 3.1M | 3.4% |
| 10 to 14 | 58 | 4.3M | 3.3% |
| 15 to 20 | 26 | 5.3M | 3.0% |
Text on the photos? A little, mostly up front.
Almost every viral dump had words somewhere, but very few. The most saved pattern was one line on the cover and nothing after it.
| Text pattern | Dumps | Median views | Saved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small label on most slides"the jacket", "the bag", "π Rome" | 108 | 3.4M | 3.3% |
| One line on slide 1, then silent"some things i've baked recently" | 36 | 3.1M | 4.1% |
| Same line on every slide"please be worth it." | 8 | 6.9M | 1.9% |
| No text at all | 10 | 3.4M | 2.3% |

How to make a photo dump on TikTok in photo mode.
A TikTok photo dump is a photo post people swipe, not a video. Choose the order before you upload: once you've selected the photos, it is hard to rearrange them.
Pick 6 to 12 photos and set the order
Cover: a person. Then alternate details, places and people, and end on a detail.
Tap + and open Upload
Tap + at the bottom, then Upload next to the record button.
Select multiple, in order
Turn on Select multiple and tap your photos in the order they should show. The first one becomes the cover.
Keep it in photo mode
Leave it as photos so people swipe. Video mode makes it play by itself.
Add one line and a sound
Tap Aa on slide 1 and write a few words, then pick a sound. More in adding text to a slideshow.
Write a short caption and post
A few words and some hashtags (see below), then post or save to drafts.
On Instagram the same dump goes in as a carousel: tap +, choose Post, tap the multiple-select icon and add up to 20 photos. Instagram crops every slide to the first photo's shape, so make them all 4:5 portrait. The full TikTok walkthrough, with screens, is in how to make a slideshow on TikTok, and picking a cover after the fact is in changing a slideshow cover.
Photo dump captions: shorter than you think.
The captions on the 175 viral dumps were tiny. Many were only hashtags or a row of emoji, and the photos did the talking. We collected all of them, with views, on a separate page of photo dump captions.

For app makers: one screen among the life photos.
The easiest place to show an app without it reading like an ad: one photo where the phone happens to be open.
viral dumps had a phone screen in them at all, and 11 had exactly one. One is the natural dose.
of our "where the app fits" notes for these dumps put it in one slide, usually mid-deck: a phone on the counter or in a hand.
are a weak fit for a screen, like textless pet dumps. There the app goes in the caption or into a different format.
Examples made by ClonBot to show what it does. We're not affiliated with these apps.
That is how ClonBot builds them. It starts from a viral dump in its library of 1,332 slideshows, keeps the order and the slide-one line, and writes a new one with your consistent creator, friends cast per post, and your app's real screens in the one photo where a phone belongs. You approve before anything posts. More on the approach in TikTok slideshows for apps, and plans are on pricing.
Photo dump questions
How many photos should a photo dump have?
Six to twelve covers most viral dumps: 68% of the 175 we analysed sat in that range, and the median was 9. Posts with 6 to 9 photos were saved most often (3.4%). TikTok photo mode allows up to 35 photos and Instagram up to 20.
What is the best order for a photo dump?
Lead with a person, since 61% of viral dumps did. Then alternate details, places and people, keep any screenshot in the middle, and end on a detail or a place, which 58% of last slides were. Try it in the sequencer above.
What does photo dump mean?
It means posting a batch of loosely related photos together, as if you emptied your camera roll, instead of one polished picture. On TikTok it's a photo slideshow people swipe; on Instagram it's a carousel.
Is it photodump or photo dump?
Both are used and mean the same thing. "Photo dump", two words, is the more common spelling in search and in captions.
What's a nicer way to say photo dump?
"Camera roll", "lately", "recap", "[month] in pictures", "postcards from [place]" or "little moments". Many viral dumps skip the label and just write a line about the moment.
What are good photos for a photo dump?
One clear photo of you or your friends for the cover, then close details (hands, food, a ticket, a view out of a window), a place or two, and candid shots. Plain phone photos beat edited ones. People made up about a third of all slides in the viral set.
