Account names are left out. Every written caption keeps the shape of one real caption, and nothing is sent anywhere: it all runs in your browser. Need the first slide too? The hook generator does that part.
What a viral TikTok caption looks like, counted.
We read the captions of 1,303 viral TikTok slideshows in ClonBot's library. Most look like this one, taken from a beauty post with 33.3M views.
Haircut ideas 🫶🏼 #hairstyle #haircut #bangs #pixiecut #fyp Real caption, hashtag list shortened. The slides say “Wolf cut”, “Hime cut”, “Bob cut”: the caption only names the post.
- 35
Median characters in the first line of a caption, hashtags left out. 56% stay under 40, so the line fits on screen without a tap.
- 52%
of captions with words have at least one emoji. Usually at the end.
- 5
The median number of hashtags. 40% of the posts include #fyp or a variant of it.
- 26%
of the posts had no words in the caption at all, only hashtags. They still got 3.8M median views, a touch above the library's 3.6M.
- 27%
are written fully in lowercase. That is the generator's casual tone.
- 11%
ask a question. Fewer than you'd expect, but those posts were saved more (4.2% against 3.5%).
Short captions get seen, long ones get saved.
Caption length against results, over the same 1,303 posts. The caption doesn't cause either number alone, but the split is clear.
Median views and save rate, by caption length
Characters of caption text, hashtags left out. Save rate is saves divided by views.

- 61 to 120201 posts3.3M3.8%
- Over 120196 posts2.5M4.5%
The shortest captions sat under the posts with the most views: 5.6M median for 15 characters or fewer, against 2.5M for captions over 120 characters. Those are mostly relatable and quote slideshows, where the slides carry the post.
Long captions flip it. Posts with over 120 characters of caption had the highest save rate, 4.5%, because they tend to be guides and recipes where the caption adds the details: amounts, steps, the place names.
So pick the length by the post. A list or a joke gets a few words. A guide people will come back to can take a title and a second line, which is what the “Two parts” length writes.
Where the caption sits, and why slide one matters more.
Example made by ClonBot to show what it does. We're not affiliated with this app.
Bottom of the screen, a line or two
On a photo post the caption sits under your username, over the bottom of the slide. One or two lines show before “more”; the rest needs a tap. That is why the first line has to work alone.
Slide one does the hook's job
People read the big text on the first slide before they read the caption. Write the hook there (the hook generator helps) and let the caption add a little: who it's for, part 2, a question.
The TikTok caption character limit is 4,000
As of October 2026, a caption can run to 4,000 characters, and photo posts also have a short title field (up to 90 characters). Viral captions use a tiny part of it: the median in our set is 116 characters with hashtags. Changing one after posting is covered in how to edit a TikTok caption.
Seven caption shapes, and what each did.
The generator writes in these shapes, each formula keeping the wording of one real caption.
| Shape | Posts | Median views | Saved |
|---|---|---|---|
| A short labela few words naming what the slides are, often with one emoji | 279 | 4.8M | 3.0% |
| A mini posta title, then a few sentences that add what the slides leave out | 196 | 2.5M | 4.5% |
| A questionasks the viewer something they can answer in the comments | 108 | 3.1M | 4.2% |
| I, me, mya first-person line, like a note to a friend | 60 | 3.2M | 3.5% |
| Save thistells the viewer the post is worth keeping | 37 | 2.2M | 5.6% |
| Part 1, part 2the post is one of a series, and the number says there is more | 34 | 4.0M | 4.9% |
| For my ...names who the post is for | 15 | 2.0M | 4.7% |
For views: a short label
“Haircut ideas”, “home lately”, “modern home inspo”. A few words that name the post. The most common shape, and the most viewed.
For saves: say save, or say part 2
“save this for next semester” and “part 3” captions had the best save rates, 5.6% and 4.9%.
Hashtags under a caption: five is the ceiling now.
of the viral posts from January 2024 to June 2025 used more than five hashtags.
posts from September 2025 on used five or fewer.
TikTok started capping posts at five hashtags in mid-2025, and the library shows the switch month by month. That is why the generator stops at five.
Every hashtag set starts with your topic as a tag. Then come the tags viral posts in your niche used most, and on about two sets in five #fyp, close to the 40% of our posts that carried it. Which tags deserve the slots is a bigger question, answered in the TikTok hashtags guide.
Posting a photo dump? Those captions follow their own rules, with lists by mood on the photo dump captions page.
Want the slides under the caption, too?
Type your app and ClonBot writes three slideshow ideas around it, each built on a slideshow that already went viral, with the hook, the slides and where your app shows up. Free, about 20 seconds.
No sign-up. You get three full posts, not just a caption.
Questions about TikTok captions.
How do you write a caption on a TikTok post?
After you pick your photos or video and tap Next, type the caption in the text box on the post screen, add up to five hashtags, and post. Keep the first line short so it shows without a tap.
Should I use captions on TikTok?
Yes, but they can be tiny. In 1,303 viral slideshows, 26% had only hashtags, and the most viewed captions were 15 characters or fewer. A caption helps most when it adds what the slides don't: who it's for, part 2, a question.
What is a short and simple TikTok caption I can use?
Name the post in two or three words and add an emoji: “[topic] ideas 🫶”, “[topic] lately ✨”, “for my [people]”, or “which one is yours?”. Those are real viral shapes. Type your topic above and pick “Few words” to get them filled in.
What is the TikTok caption character limit?
4,000 characters as of October 2026; photo posts also have a separate short title. The median viral caption in our set was 116 characters including hashtags.
How many hashtags should a TikTok caption have?
Up to five, which is also TikTok's limit since mid-2025. Three to five specific ones (your topic, your niche) do more than broad tags. The hashtags guide covers picking them.
Is this caption generator free, and is it AI?
Free, no sign-up, no limit. It doesn't call an AI: it fills 22 formulas, each taken from a real viral caption, with your topic and your niche's words, emoji and hashtags, in your browser.
Should my app's name go in the caption?
Usually not. A caption that names a product reads like an ad. Show the app on a slide where it helps the story and let the comments ask.
