Product Hunt launch: one big day, used well.

A Product Hunt launch gives you one day in front of founders, makers and early adopters, a product page that stays up, and a badge. It rarely gives you users at scale. Here is how it works as of October 2026, what to prepare, an hour-by-hour plan in your time zone, and how to keep the attention going after midnight.

Free, no sign-up. Type your App Store app for three TikTok slideshow ideas you can post around your launch.

Is Product Hunt worth it? The short answer.

For a SaaS, developer, AI or productivity tool: usually yes, as one launch moment among several. For a consumer mobile app: only if your users are tech people. A Product Hunt launch is free, takes a week or two to prepare and a full day to run. It brings a spike of visitors, early feedback and a page that ranks for your name. It does not replace a channel that brings new people every day.

What a launch brings

  • A day of traffic from people who try new things, larger if you are featured and near the top.
  • Feedback in public. Comments from makers tell you fast what is unclear.
  • A permanent product page and followers: everyone who upvotes follows it.
  • A badge and a story for your site, your investors and your next post.

What it doesn't bring

  • Steady users. Traffic drops back the next day; the leaderboard resets every 24 hours.
  • Your target customer, unless that customer is a maker, founder or tech worker.
  • A strong backlink by itself. The website button on product pages carries rel="ugc" (checked October 2026), which Google treats as a hint, not a full link.

How Product Hunt works as of October 2026.

The rules changed a lot since the days of top hunters and vote rings. These come from Product Hunt's own launch guide and help center.

  • Every day is a 24-hour race in Pacific Time.

Launch day runs from midnight to midnight PT. Product Hunt suggests scheduling for 12:01 am PT so you get the full day. You can schedule up to a month ahead; "Launch Now" was replaced by drafts and scheduling.

  • Editors decide what gets featured.

A team member reviews each launch against four criteria: useful, novel, high craft and creative. Waitlist-only products, directories, templates, courses and most hardware aren't featured. Products that aren't featured are still listed under "See all of today's products", on your profile and in search.

  • Ranking runs on points, not raw upvotes.

Points combine upvotes and meaningful engagement like comments and shares, and one upvote doesn't always equal one point. Featured status is one of the factors. The full formula isn't public.

  • You don't need a hunter.

Product Hunt encourages makers to hunt their own product and says there is no discernible advantage in using a third-party hunter. Hunters can schedule at most two hunts a day. Launch from a personal account, not a company account.

  • Don't ask for upvotes.

Asking or paying people to upvote can drop your launch in the ranking or take it off the homepage. Share the launch and ask for feedback and comments instead.

  • Day, week and month winners.

Product of the Day, Week (Monday to Sunday) and Month go to the most points. The weekday Daily Digest email shows the previous day's top 10, and editors also pick launches outside it.

The launch form is short, and every field is visible on the day. Limits below are from Product Hunt's launch guide.

The launch is one day in a longer plan: beta, store page, first posts, launch week, the month after. That timeline is on how to launch an app; this page sticks to Product Hunt itself.

Launch-day planner, in your time zone.

Product Hunt runs on Pacific Time, so a launch at 12:01 am PT is around 9 am in Berlin and mid-afternoon in Singapore. Pick your date and zone, and the plan below shows when each job happens for you. Tick tasks off as you go.

Mobile apps vs SaaS: who a launch is worth it for.

Product Hunt's crowd is mostly makers, founders, designers and developers. The closer your buyer is to them, the more the day is worth.

Your buyers are the audience. Expect real signups and comments with substance.

    • Productivity and B2B SaaS for small teamsSelf-serve, card payment, free trial

Useful for awareness and hiring. Pipeline comes from sales, search and referrals.

After midnight, turn the launch into a slideshow series.

Product Hunt gives you one spike. TikTok slideshows can keep people finding your app every day after it. These four formats from ClonBot's library of 1,332 viral slideshows fit a "we launched" series.

    • The tool stack

"Tools I used to build and launch my app." Your product sits in slot two or three, between tools everyone knows.

    • What I wish I knew

"What I wish I knew before launching my first app." Honest lessons from the day, one per slide.

    • The cost breakdown

"What it cost to launch my app," with the total at the end. Price curiosity makes people swipe to the last slide.

    • Advice to my younger self

"Launch tips I'd tell myself a year ago." Authority from having shipped, aimed at people about to.

    Product Hunt launch questions.

    How does Product Hunt work?

Makers post a product for a given day. Each day starts at midnight Pacific Time and lasts 24 hours. Editors feature some launches on the homepage. Launches earn points from upvotes and engagement, and the most points wins Product of the Day. All launches stay listed and searchable after the day.

How do I launch on Product Hunt?

Make a personal account, prepare a tagline, description, thumbnail, at least two gallery images and a first comment, and schedule the launch for 12:01 am PT up to a month ahead. On the day, share it with your own people, ask for feedback rather than votes, and reply to every comment. The planner above lays out the hours.

When should I launch on Product Hunt?

At 12:01 am PT, so you get the whole day. As for the day of the week, Product Hunt's own advice is the day you're most prepared. Weekdays bring more visitors and more competition; weekends are quieter on both.

How much does Product Hunt cost?

Launching is free. Product Hunt makes money from advertising and sponsored placements, which are separate from the free launch.

    Do I need a hunter?

No. Product Hunt says makers should hunt their own products and that a third-party hunter gives no discernible advantage.

Can I ask friends to upvote?

Product Hunt's answer is "please don't". Asking for or rewarding upvotes can push your launch down or off the homepage. Tell people you launched and ask what they think; the votes that follow count.

    Is Product Hunt legit?

Yes. It has been a launch site for tech products since 2013. Treat it as a day of attention, not a growth channel.

What are some alternatives to Product Hunt?

Show HN on Hacker News for developer tools, BetaList for pre-launch signups, Indie Hackers and subreddits where your users already talk, and niche newsletters. For consumer apps, short-form video and slideshows on TikTok reach far more of your real users.

Launch for a day. Post for the months after.
