TikTok SEO: get your slideshows found in TikTok search.
People search TikTok the way they search Google. TikTok SEO is making sure your post says the words they type, in the places TikTok reads. Photo slideshows have an edge here, because their words are written, not spoken.

What is SEO on TikTok?
TikTok SEO means choosing the phrase people search for (like "high protein meal prep" or "how to stop procrastinating") and putting it where TikTok reads a post: the text on slide one, the first line of the caption, and one hashtag. TikTok matches searches to those words, and the post's engagement decides how high it ranks. It works on Google too, because TikTok posts show up in Google results.
How TikTok search works for a photo post.
TikTok doesn't publish its ranking weights. Its help center says search results depend on how well a post matches the search, including its caption, hashtags and sound, along with your own activity, language and location. Here is where those words live on a slideshow.
Text on slide one
The first thing a searcher sees on the results grid, and widely reported to be read for search. A slideshow has no voice track, so this is where its topic has to be said.
Title and caption first line
Photo posts have a short title (up to 90 characters as of October 2026) above the caption. It is plain text TikTok and Google can read for sure, so repeat the phrase here.
Hashtags
Searchable words, capped at five per post. One of them should be your phrase written as a tag.
Sound, and spoken words on videos
The sound is listed among search signals. Videos also get matched on what is said in them; photo posts don't have that, which is why the written text carries more weight.

What 1,286 viral slideshows did with their search phrase.
We read slide one, the caption and the hashtags of every slideshow in our library that had text on slide one. A post counts when a topic hashtag it used itself also appears in its slide-one text.
Share of viral slideshows whose slide-one text contains one of their own topic hashtags, by format. Broad tags like #fyp and community tags like #studytok are left out. Posts without a topic tag count as no, so these are floors.
of the 1,286 put their topic phrase on slide one: "20 dinner ideas", "6 signs you have anxious attachment", "upper body home workout".
used the same phrase on slide one, in the caption's words and as a hashtag. Of the hits that had both a phrase on slide one and a written caption, half repeated it there.
median save rate with and without a search phrase on slide one. Searchable posts get saved, because people searched for exactly that.
| Slide one | Posts | Views | Saved | × usual |
|---|---|---|---|---|

The trade-off is real: curiosity hooks, quotes and relatable posts had more raw views. Use search hooks for guides, lists and how-tos, and curiosity hooks for stories. Our TikTok hooks guide covers both.

TikTok keywords: how to find what people search.
You don't need a paid keyword tool to start. TikTok shows you what people type, and for an app the best phrases come from the job it does.
Ask the search bar
Type the start of your topic and read the suggestions; they come from real searches. Many posts also show a suggested search near the comments, which tells you how TikTok labels them. Then check Creator Search Insights (search for it in the app, as of October 2026): it lists what people search and flags topics with few posts. Our guide to TikTok Creator Search Insights goes step by step.
Search phrases for an app's job
People rarely search an app's name. They search the problem: "best app for…", "how to stop…", "apps that…". Put that phrase on slide one and let the app show on the phone in the photos. 13 viral slideshows in our library named apps on slide one, for example:
- apps you need as a med student
- 4 apps that will make you disgustingly productive
- Top 3 best apps for couples
- Screen timehow to stop doomscrolling
- Budgetinghow to save money fast
- Habitsbest app for building habits
- Languagehow to learn spanish fast
How to add SEO to a TikTok slideshow, in order.
Pick one phrase
Two to five words someone would type, taken from the search bar. One post, one phrase. A post that tries to rank for everything says nothing clearly.
Say it on slide one
Put the phrase near the start, the way people type it: "how to stop doomscrolling" beats "my screen time era". Keep the hook short; the median viral hook is 8 words. Text placement tips are in how to add text to a TikTok slideshow.
Repeat it in the title or first caption line
Viral captions keep it short: 56% of first lines are under 40 characters. Ideas in shapes that worked are in the TikTok caption generator.
Make it one of five hashtags
Write the phrase as a tag, then add your community and niche tags. In 1,303 viral captions, 88% of tags named a topic and only 12% were broad tags like #fyp. More in our TikTok hashtags guide.
Deliver on the later slides
The slides after the hook should do what the phrase promised. That's what earns the saves, and engagement is what moves a post up the results.
TikTok posts rank on Google too.
As of October 2026, Google regularly shows TikTok posts in its results for how-to, ideas and recipe searches, often in a row of short videos. That's a second way a slideshow keeps getting views after it leaves For You.
Google relies on the words it can read on the post's page, which are mainly the title and caption. So the phrase on your slide also belongs in the caption: TikTok matches the slide, Google matches the caption, and a searcher sees the same words in both places.
Questions about TikTok SEO.
What is SEO in TikTok?
Making a post easy to find in TikTok search: using the phrase people type on slide one or in the video, in the caption and in a hashtag, so TikTok can match the post to that search. Engagement then decides the ranking.
How do I add SEO to TikTok?
Choose one phrase from the search bar suggestions, put it near the start of slide one, repeat it in the title or caption's first line, and add it as one of your five hashtags. The checker above tests all three.
How do you rank on TikTok search?
Match the search words exactly and make a post people finish and save. In 1,286 viral slideshows, posts with their topic phrase on slide one had a higher median save rate (3.8%) than posts without (3.2%).
Does TikTok read the text on slides?
TikTok doesn't publish exactly what it reads, but on-screen text is widely reported to count, and for a photo post it is the main place the topic is said. Caption and hashtags are confirmed search signals, so repeat the phrase there.
Are hashtags still important for TikTok SEO?
They're one of the places TikTok reads, but with a five-tag cap they work best as an exact topic label. Viral posts used five tags most often, and #fyp-style tags made no measurable difference.
How do I find TikTok keywords?
Start with the search bar's autocomplete, then the suggested searches TikTok shows on posts, then Creator Search Insights, which lists what people search. For an app, start from the job it does: "how to stop…", "best app for…".
Do TikTok videos show up on Google?
Yes. Google shows TikTok posts in its results, often as short videos. The caption and title are what it reads most clearly, so keep the search phrase there.
