98 viral posts · median 7 hashtags · #fyp-style tag on 31%
Most hashtag lists are 200 tags someone thought might trend. We read the captions of 1,303 TikTok slideshows that got millions of views and counted what they actually tagged: how many, how often #fyp, and which tags each niche used.
Hashtags label a post, the post does the work. Type your app and get three slideshow ideas in about 20 seconds, free.
The best hashtags for TikTok are three to five tags that say exactly what your post is about: one or two for the topic, one for the community that watches it (like #studytok or #gymtok), and at most one broad tag like #fyp. As of October 2026, TikTok won't let you add more than five. Viral posts used five more than any other number, and the count had no real link to views.
Pick a niche and a topic. The generator builds a set from the hashtags that viral posts in that niche used most, and that appeared together on the same posts. Nothing is invented and nothing is sent anywhere.
In viral posts of this niche, counted once per post.
Counts from the captions of 1,303 viral TikTok slideshows. Broad tags (#fyp, #viral and their spellings) are left out of this list.
Every TikTok post ID contains the second it was published, so we could line up the 1,303 captions by date. The share of viral posts with more than five hashtags tells the story of a rule change.
Through mid-2025, around seven in ten viral posts carried more than five hashtags, some of them 30 or more. Then the share collapsed: 3 of 104 in the last quarter of 2025, and none since.
That matches what creators reported in July and August 2025: when you try to add a sixth hashtag, the TikTok app now stops you with a note about using accurate hashtags. TikTok never announced the cap in a press release, but as of October 2026 it is in place, and five hashtags is also the most common count across the whole library, before and after.
The rest of the caption is roomy. TikTok captions in the app take up to 4,000 characters, and the hashtags count toward that.
| Hashtags | Viral posts | Median views | × account’s usual | Save rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| None | 48 | 5.2M | 809× | 2.0% |
| 1–2 | 46 | 3.9M | 831× | 2.3% |
| 3–4 | 209 | 3.5M | 720× | 3.1% |
| 5 | 426 | 2.6M | 573× | 3.9% |
| 6–9 | 265 | 3.9M | 677× | 3.8% |
| 10 or more | 309 | 4.3M | 867× | 3.4% |
Read this table as a description, not a recipe. Across all 1,303 posts the rank correlation between hashtag count and views is 0.12, and against views compared with the account's usual it is 0.04: as close to no relationship as data gets. The five-tag row also skews toward 2025 and 2026, so its posts have had less time to collect views. These are posts that already went viral, so the table can't tell you what adding a tag does to a post that didn't.
#fyp is the single most used tag in the library, on 432 posts (33%). Counting #foryou, #foryoupage and spellings like #fypシ, 524 of 1,303 viral posts (40%) used one.
| With #fyp-style tag (524) | Without (779) | |
|---|---|---|
| Views (median) | 4.2M | 3.1M |
| Times the account’s usual views | 692× | 653× |
| Save rate (saves per view) | 3.3% | 3.7% |
The raw median views look like a win for #fyp. They aren't. Those posts tended to come from accounts that get more views anyway: measured against each account's usual views, the two groups are almost level, and the posts without #fyp were saved slightly more. Split by niche, #fyp posts came out ahead in 12 niches and behind in 9. That is a coin flip.
Viral creators seem to have noticed. The share of hits with a #fyp-style tag fell from 48% of 2024 posts to 32% of 2026 posts. With only five slots, a tag that names no topic costs you a tag that does. If you like the habit, one is fine; the generator above adds exactly one.
Hashtags don't push a post onto the For You page. TikTok's own explanation of its recommendations lists "video information, which might include details like captions, sounds, and hashtags" as one input, weighted below how people interact with the post. The TikTok algorithm guide covers the rest. In practice they do three jobs.
Along with the caption and the text on your slides, hashtags help TikTok decide which viewers to test the post on first. A precise tag beats a popular one.
#highproteinmeals over #food
People search TikTok like a search engine, and hashtags are searchable words in your caption. Name the thing people would type. More on that in our guide to TikTok SEO.
#budgettravel, #studytips
Tags ending in "tok" name an audience, not a topic. 346 of the 1,303 hits (27%) used at least one, the most popular being #studytok, #gymtok and #cleantok.
#booktok, #momsoftiktok
Niche beats broad. Of the 9,951 hashtags in the library, 88% named a topic or a community and only 12% were broad tags like #fyp, #viral or #trending. The 9,951 tags were 5,088 different ones, so viral creators mostly wrote tags for the post in front of them rather than pasting a fixed block.
Trending hashtags on TikTok change weekly. For what is trending today, TikTok's Creative Center has a Trends page that lists popular hashtags by country, industry and period. Use a trending tag when your post is genuinely about that trend; a trending tag on an unrelated post just shows it to people who won't watch it. For finding topics people search for, see TikTok Creator Search Insights. 25 viral posts in the library even tagged #creatorsearchinsights, a sign of creators chasing search topics.
The six topic hashtags each niche's viral posts used most, with the number of posts that carried them. Broad tags are left out. The full lists are in the generator above, and the niches themselves are covered in TikTok niches.

Not even #fyp, and their median was still 5.2M views. Here are four of them. What they share is a first slide that makes you swipe, which is what our guide on how to go viral on TikTok is about.
That is the honest takeaway from 1,303 captions: hashtags label a post, the format sells it. ClonBot is built on that order. It starts from a library of 1,332 slideshows that already went viral, keeps the hook, slide rhythm and text style that made each one work, and writes a new story in which your app shows up naturally, on its real screens. Autopilot builds a post every night for you to approve, then posts it to your TikTok at your times.
Where the hashtags go. 1,221 of the 1,255 tagged viral posts (97%) put them at the end of the caption, and 303 captions were nothing but hashtags. Write the caption line first, then the tags. For the line itself, the TikTok caption generator builds captions from real viral ones, and photo dump captions covers the short, lower-case style.
The ones that name your exact topic and audience. In 1,303 viral slideshows the most used were #fyp (432 posts), #foryou, #viral and #foryoupage, then niche tags like #motivation, #selfimprovement and #studytok. Popular isn't the same as useful: pick from your niche with the generator above, and keep one broad tag at most.
Three to five. As of October 2026 the app caps you at five, and five was already the most common count among viral posts (426 of 1,303). Fewer is fine too: 48 hits used none.
They help TikTok and searchers understand what a post is about, but they don't create views on their own. In our data the number of hashtags had almost no relationship with views (rank correlation 0.12, or 0.04 measured against the account's usual views).
Not measurably. 40% of viral posts used #fyp or a variant, and against their account's usual views they did about the same as posts without it (692× versus 653×), with slightly lower save rates. Its use among hits fell from 48% in 2024 to 32% in 2026.
An older rule of thumb: three broad, three niche and three specific hashtags. It needs nine tags, which TikTok no longer allows. A version that fits five slots: one or two topic tags, one community tag, one specific tag, and an optional broad one.
No hashtag gets views by itself. Hits carried every kind of tag, and the 48 with none had higher median views (5.2M) than the library overall (3.6M). Choose tags for accuracy, then spend your effort on the first slide.
Trending tags change every week, so any fixed list goes stale. TikTok's Creative Center Trends page shows the current popular hashtags by country and industry. Use one only when your post is about that trend.
Nobody can promise that, and hashtags won't do it. What viral slideshows share is a hook on slide one, a format people already save and share, and a clear topic. Our guide on how to go viral on TikTok breaks down 1,332 of them.
