Updated 26 October 2026

The TikTok aspect ratio is 9:16: a vertical 1080 × 1920 pixel video or photo fills the screen. Photo-mode slideshows also take 3:4 (1080 × 1440), which TikTok shows whole with a dark band above and below, and a post can hold up to 35 photos.

Square and landscape files work too, but they play as a band in the middle of the screen. TikTok doesn't stretch or crop photos in photo mode, so the shape you upload is the shape people see.

TikTok doesn't publish a profile photo size; the 20 × 20 minimum is the figure social media guides agree on. Limits change by account and region, so the upload screen has the final word.

We measured every slide image of the 1,332 viral slideshows in the ClonBot library: 11,457 slides, as TikTok serves them. The official size is one thing; this is what got millions of views.

1080 × 1440

The single most common slide size (13.7% of slides), ahead of 1080 × 1920 (10.0%) and 2160 × 2880 (5.9%).

of viral slideshows mix shapes within one post, say a 9:16 cover and 3:4 photos after it. Matching every slide is optional.

85%

of slides are at least 1080 pixels wide. Upload at 1080 wide or more; smaller photos look soft after TikTok compresses them.

So the practical answer for slideshows: shoot or export 3:4 if your photos are camera photos, 9:16 if you want every pixel of the screen, and don't crop a good photo just to hit 9:16. The steps for posting one are in how to make a slideshow on TikTok, and the formats behind these numbers are in the TikTok carousel guide. ClonBot builds its slideshows in these same shapes, from formats that already went viral.

TikTok size questions.

Is TikTok 9:16 or 3:4?

Both. Videos are made for 9:16 (1080 × 1920). Photo-mode slideshows accept 9:16 and 3:4 (1080 × 1440), and 3:4 is the most common shape in viral slideshows: 36.9% of the 11,457 slides we measured, against 26.2% for 9:16.

What is the best image ratio for TikTok?

9:16 at 1080 × 1920 if you want the photo to fill the screen. For slideshows of real photos, 3:4 at 1080 × 1440 keeps the whole picture and looks native, because it is the shape a phone camera shoots.

What aspect ratio is 1920x1080?

1920 × 1080 is 16:9, the landscape shape of YouTube and most screens. On TikTok it plays as a strip across the middle. Turn it to 1080 × 1920 (9:16) for full screen.

Is 1080p or 4K better for TikTok?

For most posts, 1080p. TikTok shows photos at up to 1080p and plays most videos at 1080p, so a 4K file mostly costs you upload time. Export 1080 × 1920 at a good bitrate.

How do I stop TikTok from zooming in on my video?

Most phones are taller than 9:16, so TikTok enlarges a 9:16 video slightly to fill the screen and trims a sliver off the sides. You can't switch that off, so keep faces and text away from the edges. If the clip was zoomed in the editor, pinch it back out before posting, and export at exactly 1080 × 1920.

How do I make a TikTok fit the whole screen?

Use 9:16. Crop the photo or video to 1080 × 1920 before uploading, with the crop tool above or in your editor. Anything wider shows with bars.

How many photos can a TikTok slideshow have?

Up to 35 photos in one photo-mode post, and at least two. Viral slideshows rarely use that many; most have 5 to 12.

The right size is the easy part. What goes on the slides is the hard part.
