Can you edit a TikTok caption after posting? Usually.

To edit a TikTok caption after posting, open the post on your profile, tap ••• (or press and hold), choose Edit post, change the caption and hashtags, and tap Save. Views, likes and comments stay. As of October 2026 TikTok has rolled Edit post out gradually: many accounts have it on recent posts, some don't have it at all.

  • Recent postsReports put the window at about a week. TikTok hasn't published a limit.
  • Words onlyPhotos, video, slide text and sound can't change once posted.
  • Missing?Update the app, then use a pinned comment or repost (below).

How to edit a TikTok caption, step by step.

After posting, on iPhone or Android

The same on both. Button names move between app versions.

  1. Tap Profile and open the post.
  2. Tap ••• on the right, or press and hold the post.
  3. Tap Edit post in the row of options. No button means this post or your account doesn't have editing yet.
  4. Change the caption, hashtags or mentions. On a photo post the title, where your version shows one, is a separate field.
  5. Tap Save. The post updates in place.

On desktop, in TikTok Studio

Open TikTok Studio on tiktok.com, go to Posts and look for an edit option on the post. Some accounts can change the description there; many can't, as of October 2026. If it isn't offered, use the phone app.

Before posting, or in drafts

Everything is open until you tap Post. Type in the description box on the post screen (up to 4,000 characters; photo posts also have a short title). For a saved draft, open it from your drafts, tap Next and rewrite. A scheduled post often keeps its caption: delete and schedule it again.

Edit post missing? Keep it, pin a comment, or repost.

First update TikTok and look again: the feature reached accounts at different times. If it still isn't there, pick by how the post is doing.

Keep it

The post is already getting views

A typo rarely costs a post anything; deleting it throws away its views and comments.

Pin a comment

Something is wrong or missing

Write the correction as a comment, press and hold it and tap Pin. It stays at the top of the comments.

Repost

Posted minutes ago, few views

Delete the post or set it to Only me, then post again with the right caption. It starts from zero. For a slideshow, post from the original photos so you keep separate slides; you may need to pick the sound again.

Does editing a TikTok caption affect views? What's known, and what isn't.

Known

  • An edit keeps the post's views, likes and comments. A repost starts at zero.
  • TikTok lists captions and hashtags among the "video information" its recommendations use, weighted below how people interact with a post.
  • A posted slideshow keeps its photos, order and slide text, so the first slide still carries the hook.

Not published, so speculation

  • "Editing gives an old post a second push." TikTok has never said so.
  • "Editing resets or hurts reach." Some creators report a pause after an edit; it is anecdotal.
  • The exact edit window and how many edits are allowed per post.

So fix a wrong keyword or a typo early, while a post is still being shown to its first viewers, and don't edit old posts hoping for a bump.

Caption fixer: check the new caption before you save it.

Paste a caption. It checks the first line, hashtags, topic word and emoji against 1,303 viral TikTok slideshows and suggests a cleaner version. It runs in your browser; nothing is sent.

Before you rewrite: what 1,303 viral captions did.

From the captions under 1,303 viral TikTok slideshows in ClonBot's library, the same set behind our TikTok caption generator.

    35

characters is the median first line, hashtags left out. 56% stay under 40, short enough to read without tapping "more".

    77%

of captions repeat a word from slide one, in the text or a hashtag. Those posts were saved 3.9% of the time, against 2.4% for the rest. The rest, mostly jokes, got more views (5.5M median against 3.1M).

    2

emoji is the median when a caption uses any; 52% of captions with words do. Captions with two or three were saved 4.2% of the time, with none 3.4%. Only 7% use four or more.

Name the topic when the post is worth keeping

Guides, routines and lists get saved, and a topic word in the caption helps search. A joke can stay a few words. Picking the five tags is covered in the TikTok hashtags guide.

    Rewriting a photo dump?

Those run short, lowercase, often only emoji. Start from real ones in photo dump captions, or get six new ones from the caption generator.

Fewer captions to fix, because you check them first.

ClonBot builds TikTok slideshows for app makers every night, each on one of 1,332 slideshows that already went viral, with your app's real screens and the caption written with the slides. You approve each post or type what should change before it goes out, so the caption is right while editing is still free. See how to make a slideshow on TikTok for the manual way.

    Editing TikTok captions, answered.

Why can't I edit my TikTok caption?

Edit post reached accounts gradually and is reported to work only on recent posts, roughly the last week. Update the app; if it's still missing, pin a comment with the correction or repost.

Can I edit a TikTok caption more than once?

Usually yes, while the post is still recent. Some guides report a limit of one edit a day; TikTok hasn't published one, so the menu on your post is the real answer.

How long after I post a TikTok can I edit the caption?

Reports put it at about seven days. Older posts usually lose the Edit post button.

Can I edit the text on my TikTok video or slides?

No. Text added with the text tool is part of the post. Fix it before posting, or repost. For placement, see adding text to a TikTok slideshow.

How do I add a caption on TikTok?

After choosing your photos or video, tap Next and type in the description box on the post screen. Add up to five hashtags and post.

Slideshows with the caption done, approved before they post.

Setting up your app and creator is free. Plans from $99 a month for 30 posts, one a day.
