How the TikTok algorithm works, in short.

The TikTok algorithm is the system that picks every post in your For You feed. For each viewer it pulls a large set of eligible posts, predicts how likely that person is to watch, finish, like, share, save or skip each one, ranks them by that score, and then mixes the list so you don't see the same creator or sound twice in a row. What people do feeds the next prediction, for them and for viewers like them.

So the algorithm prioritizes how people respond, not who posted. TikTok says follower count isn't a direct factor, and our library agrees: 442 viral slideshows came from accounts with under 10,000 followers, with a median of 2.6 million views.

  • User interactions weighs most

What you watch, finish, skip, like, share, comment on and save, who you follow, and what you post yourself.

  • Content information helps match

The post itself: captions, sounds, hashtags, when it was posted. This tells TikTok who to try it on.

  • User and device info weighs least

Language, country setting, device type. TikTok calls these lower-weight, mostly for performance.

What happens after you post: the For You test loop.

TikTok doesn't describe fixed batches; it scores every eligible post for every viewer. From the creator's side that looks like a loop: a few people see it, they react, and the reaction decides who sees it next. Tap a step.

Steps 3 and 4 repeat for every new group of viewers, until people stop responding. Dots are an illustration, not real audience sizes.

What TikTok says

"Only videos that pass moderation are included in the pool of videos that can be recommended."

Posts not suitable for a broad audience, posts from accounts under 16, and reused material with nothing new stay up but aren't recommended. TikTok's For You eligibility standards were last revised in a guidelines update that took effect on 24 September 2026.

What it means for you

Check first

An ineligible post says so in its analytics and account status. If nothing shows there, a quiet post is just quiet, like most suspected shadowbans turn out.

How the algorithm reads a photo slideshow.

TikTok's explainers talk about videos, but the same interactions exist on photo posts. A swipe is the slideshow's version of watch time.

TikTok interactions and what they look like on a photo slideshow
Signal TikTok namesOn a slideshowWhat moves it
SkippedScrolled past slide oneA hook you can read before the thumb moves. The median viral hook was 8 words.
Time spentSwipes and reading time on each slideA reason on every slide to see the next: a list, a reveal, a story beat.
FinishedReached the last slideFewer words. The 10% biggest hits used 59 words in total, the bottom quarter 128.
FavoritedSaved to come back toSomething worth keeping. Posts with 4 to 9 slides were saved by 3.9% of viewers, 1 to 3 slides by 1.5%.
SharedSent to a friendA post about someone: "send this to the friend who…". 5 shares per 1,000 views is typical.
Coming backSwiping back, reopening it from savesTikTok doesn't name rewatches, but each return is more time spent. Dense, useful slides get reopened.

Built for every signal: a hook that promises a payoff, one method per slide, a list worth saving. The original format got 15M views; this remake puts a screen-time app on the last slide. Tap to swipe.

Reach and saves don't always come together: the 10% most viewed hits were saved by 1.8% of viewers, the bottom quarter by 4.8%. Stories travel wide, guides get kept. More on that in TikTok saves, and the full numbers by slide count are in our TikTok slideshow statistics.

The TikTok algorithm in 2026: what to do with it.

Make the first slide earn the swipe. Every round of the loop starts with a one-second decision. Our TikTok hooks guide has the patterns.

Give the post a clear topic. Captions, slide text and up to five precise hashtags tell TikTok who to try it on. For search, see TikTok SEO.

Judge each post against your usual, not against followers. The median account behind our hits usually got 4,773 views a post. A post at three times your usual is the loop saying yes; remake that format. The how to go viral on TikTok playbook has the steps.

Post often, and make each post new. The algorithm can't reward posts you didn't make, and it filters out repeats. ClonBot was built for this: it starts every slideshow from one of 1,332 formats that already went viral, writes a new story where your app appears on a real screen, and posts it every day after you approve. Results then compares each post with your account's usual views. Plans start at $99 a month for 30 posts; see pricing.

Questions about the TikTok algorithm.

What does TikTok's algorithm prioritize?

How people interact with a post: whether they watch it, finish it, skip it, like, share, comment or save it, and whether they follow. Content details like captions, sounds and hashtags help it decide who to show the post to. Device and account settings weigh least. Follower count isn't a direct factor.

Is 1,000 views in 1 hour good on TikTok?

For a small account, yes: the first viewers kept responding and TikTok kept finding more. If your posts usually end up with a few hundred views, it is a post worth remaking. Our viral views checker puts a number against your usual.

Does rewatching a TikTok count as a view?

TikTok doesn't publish exactly how replays are counted. It lists time spent and finishing among its signals, and analytics show how many viewers watched to the end. Rewatching your own post doesn't reliably add reach.

What is the 3 second rule on TikTok?

A creator rule of thumb, not a TikTok rule: you have about three seconds to give someone a reason to stay. Skips and watch time are real signals, so on a slideshow the first slide must work at a glance.

How do you outsmart the TikTok algorithm?

You can't trick it for long, because it ranks on what viewers actually do. Give it better material instead: a strong first slide, a clear topic, a reason to save or send, and enough posts that some get a long run.

Does the TikTok algorithm use AI?

Yes, machine learning. TikTok describes a system that predicts how likely each viewer is to interact with each post, combines those predictions into one score and ranks by it.
