TikTok shadowban: what it is, how to check, and what is usually going on.
Most "shadowbans" are an ordinary quiet stretch. Some are a real restriction, and TikTok tells you about those. Here is how to tell which one you have, what causes each, and how long it lasts.

What is a shadowban on TikTok? The short answer.
A TikTok shadowban is what people call a sudden drop in views with no notice. TikTok doesn't use the word. What it does do is make posts or, after repeated problems, whole accounts ineligible for the For You feed, restrict features, and give strikes. Those show up in your account status or a post's analytics. If nothing shows there, the drop is most likely normal variance.
TikTok's own For You page says it: "If a video isn't getting many views, it also doesn't necessarily mean it broke a rule."
What people call a shadowban
- Views fall from thousands to hundreds for a week.
- Hashtag pages or search don't seem to show your posts.
- No message, no warning, nothing in settings.
What TikTok actually does (as of October 2026)
- Post not eligible for For You. It stays up but isn't recommended. Shown in its analytics.
- Account not eligible for For You. Temporary, after repeatedly breaking the For You standards. You're notified and can appeal.
- Feature limits and strikes. Comments, LIVE or posting can be limited. Strikes expire after 90 days.
- Bans. A banned account sees a message in the app.
Shadowban or normal dip? Find the likely cause.
Six quick questions. The answer points to the most likely cause and what to do next. Nothing leaves your browser.
Before you start
A quiet week is normal, even on accounts that later went viral.
We took 638 accounts behind viral slideshows in our library and looked at the posts they made before their hit: 24,043 ordinary posts, compared with each account's own usual views.
| Views vs usual | Share of posts |
|---|---|
| Under 10% | 0.9% |
| 10–25% | 4.6% |
| 25–50% | 13.8% |
| 50–100% | 29.7% |
| 1–2× | 22.5% |
| 2–10× | 18.5% |
| 10× or more | 10.2% |
Views of 24,043 posts made before each account's viral slideshow, divided by that account's median views (up to 45 posts per account, 638 accounts with at least 10). Counted from posts still public in October 2026; deleted flops are missing, so real dips are, if anything, more common.
ordinary posts got under half the account's usual views.
of accounts had three or more posts in a row under half their usual; 13% had five. That is what a "shadowban" feels like, on accounts that went on to a hit.
had five or more posts in a row under a quarter of their usual. A drop that deep and long is rare enough to look into.
the usual: how far the later viral post beat these accounts' typical views (median). Views come in jumps.
TikTok shadowban check: four places that actually know.
Menu names move between app versions and regions; these are the paths as of October 2026.
Account status
Profile, menu, Settings and privacy, Account status (in some versions under Support or Safety Center). Lists removed posts, strikes and restrictions, and is where you appeal.
Account check
In TikTok Studio. Reviews your account and your last 30 posts, and flags anything removed or kept out of For You.
The post's analytics
TikTok says that when a post is made ineligible for the For You feed or otherwise restricted, it appears in that post's analytics.
Content check before posting
TikTok Studio on the web has a content check that flags a post that may not be eligible for recommendation before it goes out.
Third-party "shadowban checker" sites can't see any of this. They only read public numbers, so they can tell you views are down, which you knew. For how to read your own numbers, see TikTok analytics.
Real causes of a sudden drop, most common first.
Normal varianceMost drops
Each post is shown to a small group first and spreads only if they watch. Most posts don't spread far, and a run of quiet ones is ordinary (see the data above).
Content not eligible for For YouShown in analytics
TikTok keeps some allowed content out of For You: risky stunts, sexually suggestive posts, diet and fitness extremes, misleading claims, and posts that push people to like or follow.
Reused or duplicate contentCommon on slideshows
TikTok's rules say content is ineligible "if it includes unoriginal or reused material without anything new." Pinterest photos reposted as-is, screenshots of other people's posts, another app's watermark, or your own post uploaded again all count against you.
SoundsMutes, not bans
A song can be muted after posting for copyright, and a silent post loses reach. Business accounts can only use the commercial sound library.
Spammy behaviourAccount-level
Mass following and unfollowing, follow-for-follow, bought followers or likes, copy-paste comments. TikTok removes fake engagement and treats manipulation as a violation.
Many accounts, one deviceLooks like a farm
More than one account is allowed. A phone running lots of accounts with the same posts, or automation that taps for you, looks like a farm. See running multiple TikTok accounts.
How long does a shadowban last on TikTok? What is known, and what is folklore.
There's no fixed timer, because a "shadowban" isn't one thing. Here is what TikTok has said, and what gets repeated without a source.
| Claim | Status | What we can say |
|---|---|---|
| Strikes expire after 90 days | Known | TikTok said so when it launched strikes in 2023. Many strikes can still add up to a ban. |
| Account-level For You limits are temporary | Known | TikTok notifies you and lets you appeal. It hasn't published a length. |
| An ineligible post stays ineligible | Known | Unless an appeal succeeds. It doesn't hold back your next posts by itself. |
| A normal dip lasts until a post lands | Our data | Usually a few posts. Only 2.8% of accounts had 8+ posts in a row under half their usual. |
| "A shadowban lasts 14 days" | Folklore | No TikTok source. Usually a quiet stretch that ended on its own. |
| Stop posting for a week to reset | Folklore | Nothing known resets on a break. Fewer posts just means fewer chances. |
| Delete low posts, the app or the cache | Folklore | No TikTok source says any of it helps. Fix the cause instead. |
How to get rid of a shadowban on TikTok: if account status shows a restriction, appeal it if it's wrong and stop what caused it. If nothing shows, keep posting new things and change the hook or format, not the schedule. More in how to get more views on TikTok.
Stuck at 0 views? That's a different problem.
A post at 0 views for hours is usually processing, under review, or a new account that hasn't warmed up, not a shadowban. We cover it on its own page.
Posting your app isn't spam. Posting the same post is.
A slideshow that shows your app's real screens is ordinary content if every post is new. What gets flagged is the pattern of a spam account:
- Fine: a new story every day where the app appears naturally, on one or a few accounts, at a human pace.
- Risky: the same post uploaded again and again, on one account or many; scraped images with someone else's watermark; "follow for part 2" on every caption.
ClonBot works the fine way. It starts from 1,332 slideshows that already went viral, keeps the hook and slide rhythm, and writes a new story each time with your app's real screens. Results compares every post with your account's usual, so a normal dip looks like one. From $99 a month for 30 posts; see pricing.
Questions about TikTok shadowbans.
How do I know if I'm shadowbanned on TikTok?
Check account status in Settings and privacy and run Account check in TikTok Studio. A restriction shows there or in the post's analytics. If both are clear, your recent posts just didn't spread.
How long does a TikTok shadowban last?
Strikes expire after 90 days. An account kept out of For You is restricted temporarily, with no published length. A normal dip usually ends within a few posts.
Does TikTok shadowban you for posting too much?
Not for posting often: one to three new posts a day is normal. Bursts minutes apart, the same post again, or a brand-new account at full speed look like spam. See how often to post on TikTok.
How do I know if I'm in TikTok jail?
"TikTok jail" usually means a temporary feature limit, like no commenting, LIVE or posting for a while. It shows in the app and in account status.
What does a banned TikTok account look like?
The owner sees a message in the app with an option to appeal, and others can no longer open the profile. A restricted account looks normal from outside.
Do TikTok appeals actually work?
Sometimes. A post flagged by mistake can be restored and the strike removed. TikTok doesn't publish success rates. Track appeals in the Safety Center.
Do shadowban checker websites work?
No. They can't see your account status, strikes or For You eligibility; only TikTok's own account status, Account check and post analytics can.
